One
of Indiana’s first urban Main Street projects….
NESCO
initiated in 2001 the creation of a business organization designed
to identify issues confront commercial sites along East
10th Street—the heart of the NESCO business district.
Since the inception of the East 10th Street Civic Association, businesses have
identified the need for intense revitalization of this key commercial corridor
and have formed partnerships to address revitalization needs.
During this time, the project drew the attention of Local Initiatives Support
Corporation (LISC) and Indiana Main Street program. Now the Ten East Main
Street project has earned its Indiana Main Street designation and has hired
a director
and formed committees to address those identified issues.
The project will feature the Main Street four-point approach of organization,
promotion, design and economic restructuring. The program provides a wide array
of technical assistance to participating communities including on-site technical
assistance, workshops and conferences and a lending library and publications.
The geographical boundaries of the Main Street project encompass East 10th
Street between Temple and Olney streets.
Resources are being compiled for businesses in this area including reduced
or free paint for business exteriors and lists of commercial properties available
for potential new businesses. Other resources and partnerships are being added
regularly.
